Business, Health, Social Work

The Department of Business, Health and Social Work consists of the three divisions and the administrative office. The administrative office takes care of organisational and management functions and defines strategies and targets. The three divisions are operational business units and act largely autonomously. Each division works independently to fulfil the entire service mandate: study programmes, continuing education, services, applied research and development.

Business

Courses in the Business Division are orientated towards the needs of companies and administrative bodies. The bachelor degree course in Business Administration deal with issues relating to processes within and outside the company, to various tasks and functions in the company (marketing, finance, personnel, production, logistics, etc.), to future orientation and the correct structuring of the environment. The bachelor degree in Business Information Technology is constructed on a modular basis and has an international focus. Part of the teaching is carried out in English. The course facilitates acquisition of competences for implementing business processes in IT solutions and project management, and offers a solid professional grounding in business economics and information technology, as well as in social and management skills.

Continuing Education

Professionals can benefit from a broad range of continuing education options in Business. Various MAS, DAS and CAS study programmes as well as numerous specialist courses and seminars provide extensive opportunities for knowledge consolidation, specialisation and further development.

Qualified lecturers from academic and practical backgrounds offer innovative and practice-oriented teaching. All titles and degrees are recognised on a federal level. The modular nature of the courses simplifies studies accompanying a professional occupation.

Health

Portrait

The Health Division offers bachelor degree courses in Physiotherapy, Nursing, Nutrition and Dietetics, and Midwifery. The science-based and practice-orientated education offered provides excellent linkage between study and professional training, and prepares students for responsible positions in the healthcare sector. They therefore benefit in a two-fold way: they study at a higher educational level and at the same time acquire a profession. They learn to act in a scientifically-grounded manner and early on deal with typical problems arising from everyday practice, for example in the training hospital skills centre and in communication training. In addition, the Nursing course allows work and study to be combined, as it can also be undertaken on a part-time basis. Qualified nurses can, on the basis of their previous training, complete the Midwifery bachelor degree programme in two instead of four years.

Social Work

Portrait

The Social Work Division is organised within a broad framework (Social Work, Social Pedagogy,  Socio-cultural Animation), but the focus is on social work as carried out by the Swiss federal, cantonal and municipal authorities. All courses have a modular configuration, allowing work, family life and study to be combined. There is an emphasis on interdisciplinary problem-solving, as typically occurs in professional practice.  The Division works closely with the reference disciplines of law, sociology, economics, psychology, ethics and philosophy. The social work Division also houses two competence centres –  Mediation and Conflict Management and Quality Management. Topics previously dealt with by the former Gerontology competence centre now come under the umbrella of the interdisciplinary Age Institute. This is organised on a departmental basis, bringing together expertise on issues related to ageing from the divisions of Business, Health and Social Work.
