Surface Treatment

The Surface Treatment course is a module of the CAS Wood-Based Panels programme covering all the latest developments in coatings for wood and engineered wood products.

The course:

Content + Structure


The field of wood and surface treatment is developing rapidly: with new material technologies, coatings and processes, as well as continuously evolving standards, your knowledge needs to be constantly updated. Keeping pace with these developments is crucial to remaining competitive. On the Surface Treatment course, you will gain an overview of coatings, application systems and their potential.

The cultural activities organised during the week-long intensive course in Biel also give you the chance to get to know other participants from around the world. This enables you to build a wide network of experts and specialists in the field.

This course is aimed at:

  • researchers from universities, universities of applied sciences and other research institutions

Entry requirements

University degree (university of applied sciences, university) or diploma in related subjects. Admissions decisions are made by the course leader based on applicants’ academic background and performance (‘sur dossier’).

Professional prerequisites

Experience of manufacturing engineered wood products is an advantage.

Practicalities + Application

The week of teaching in Biel consists of 36 lessons, including a one-day field trip to companies in the region. Depending on participants’ existing knowledge, approx. 10–20 hours of self-study are also required.

The intensive programme runs from Monday to Friday. Instruction begins at 8 am each day and runs until 4 pm, including lunch. A varied programme of supporting events is offered in the evenings.

The application deadline is at least four weeks before the module begins.

This fee does not include the cost of hotel accommodation during the intensive programme in Biel, food, travel or parking.
