Thomas Ehrhart becomes professor for timber engineering
30.04.2026 Thomas Ehrhart joined the Institute of Timber Construction at Bern University of Applied Sciences BFH in April. The professor for timber engineering has extensive experience in teaching, research and practice, in addition to his sound education. He is a proven expert in the field of timber and structural engineering.
Thomas Ehrhart teaches in the Timber Construction specialisation of the Bachelor in Wood Technology and in the Complex Timber Structures specialisation of the Master in Wood Technology. In addition, he is involved in the supervision of project work and bachelor’s and master’s theses, bridging the gap between scientific research and practice-oriented engineering work.
“BFH brings together practice-oriented research and students who are passionate about timber, creating ideal conditions for contributing to the further development of timber construction in Switzerland and beyond”
The civil engineer specialised in structural and timber engineering during his studies at Graz University of Technology (AT). He then completed his doctorate focusing on timber structures at ETH Zurich under Professor Andrea Frangi. At the same time, he served as a visiting doctoral researcher at Empa in Dubendorf. Since completing his postdoc research activities at ETH Zurich, Thomas Ehrhart has worked as a civil engineer and structural engineer at Schnetzer Puskas Ingenieure in Switzerland. Leveraging this dual background, he has maintained an active presence in both academia and research, notably through his appointment as a visiting professor at the University of Stuttgart.
With his extensive expertise in scientific work and practice, Thomas Ehrhart is ideally placed to promote BFH’s Institute of Timber Construction and contribute to the development of new, future-oriented research topics.
We look forward to working with him and extend him a warm welcome.
