Ralph Alessi to join HKB Jazz!

21.02.2020 American trumpeter and composer Ralph Alessi will be teaching trumpet, improvisation, composition, and ensembles at the HKB.

Following trumpeter and composer Bert Joris’ incredible contribution to the HKB over more than three decades, we are delighted to announce his successor, American trumpeter and composer Ralph Alessi. Starting in Autumn 2020, Ralph brings an almost unparalleled international experience to the HKB, having worked with an interstellar cast of some of the most creative jazz musicians of recent times (Steve Coleman, Jason Moran, Don Byron, Ravi Coltrane, Fred Hersch, Uri Caine, Marc Copland).

Having studied with the legendary Charlie Haden at CalArts in California, Ralph is the director of the groundbreaking School for Improvisational Music and has previously taught at the University of Nevada-Reno, New York University and Eastman School of Music.  He has recorded nine albums of original compositions which draw on everything from post-bop to neo-classical music, and currently records for legendary Munich-based label ECM.

Ralph will be teaching trumpet, improvisation, composition, and ensembles at the HKB. We look forward immensely to welcoming him in Bern, and welcome applications from potential students!
