Bio-based and low-emission binding agents are a key component in the wood-based materials of the future. A completely bio-based binding agent based on the wood’s own lignin and sugar-based 5-HMF (5-hydroxymethylfurfural) was developed at BFH. The new binding agent does not require any formaldehyde, can be hardened by means of temperature and is to be used in the manufacture of wood-based materials and other construction material applications in future.
