Additive Manufacturing

Take advantage of our experience and expertise in the fields of selective laser melting and laser direct metal deposition. Seize the opportunity to implement your creative solutions and ideas on additive manufacturing as part of a research cooperation project with us.

Our research group

We conduct research in the field of additive manufacturing on ways of using innovative new materials efficiently and for industrial purposes through modified procedural strategies. We improve process reliability and the quality of manufactured components using process monitoring and controlling.

Range of services

Additive manufacturing is much more than just hype or a passing fad – it is a major step towards digital manufacturing that covers both large-scale production and the manufacturing of one-off custom pieces.

‘Complexity for free’ and ‘individualisation for free’ are more than simply buzzwords. With us as a technology partner for additive manufacturing, you’ll gain competitive advantages and be ready for the manufacturing world of the future.

Work with us as part of:

  • Research cooperation projects at a national (e.g. Innosuisse) or international level
  • Bilateral research and industrial projects
  • Technology consulting on an assignment basis
  • Student theses (project, bachelor’s or master’s theses)

Areas of expertise

Our activities in the field of additive manufacturing include:

  • Selective laser melting (SLM)
We focus on developing and modifying process strategies, improving process efficiency, and analysing the use of new materials.
  • Laser direct metal deposition (LDMD)
We devise methods and strategies to increase process efficiency and enable the processing of modern materials for both laser build-up welding and additive manufacturing.
  • Process monitoring and controlling
We develop and adapt sensor- and camera-based process-monitoring systems and control algorithms for both selective laser melting and laser direct metal deposition.

Infrastructure

Together with the Switzerland Innovation Park Biel/Bienne, we operate several machines for SLM solutions.

For the analysis of high-melting-point metals, the development of new processing strategies and the integration of process monitoring and controlling systems, we use a converted SLM machine fitted with state-of-the-art Beckhoff controls.

We can carry out analysis on rapid material development on our LDMD test rig.
