Performing Arts Knowledge Graph

Background / Challenge

The digital transformation also affects the performing arts sector. Today's information technologies provide new opportunities for the dissemination of cultural and creative content. Besides, the way interested parties search for and consume offers has changed. Due to this digital shift, cultural organizations must find new ways to attract old and new audiences. Creating a linked open data ecosystem for the performing arts would help the performing arts sector in its digital transformation. Although there were some efforts and initiatives, none of them have succeeded in implementing such a data ecosystem sustainably. Therefore, a networking project is being carried out to create a linked open data ecosystem for the performing arts (LODEPA).

The aim of this project is to deploy the use of linked open data in operational systems in the field of performing arts. As the Bern University of Applied Science we undertake a step of the project and frame it as a student project, which aims for creating a performing arts knowledge graph for Switzerland. The Knowledge Graph will provide the basis for the development of services that will enable performing arts institutions to offer their services to a wider audience and to improve the findability of their shows.

The project to create a Knowledge Graph for Switzerland consists of several sequential steps, which are illustrated in the Figure below.

  • After the elaboration of the theoretical basis, it will be analyzed how data of current and future events of performing arts organizations can be fed into the Knowledge Graph (e.g. scraping data from theatre websites, importing data directly from theatre databases etc.).
  • In a next step, several working hypotheses are tested, both through practical experimentation and by means of problem-centered interviews with performing arts organizations.
  • And finally, possible use cases of the knowledge graph will be discussed in the light of the experiences gained through the project.

Logical future steps include:

  • Populating the knowledge graph with further data
  • Developing various use cases based on the performing arts knowledge graph, such as a universal cultural calendar, a performing arts recommender system or the use of the knowledge graph as a finding aid to heritage collections.
