Resource-efficient agricultural production systems

The researchers carry out research projects and provide services in all fields of agricultural sciences. Clients from the private sector, administration and non-profit organisations benefit from the staff's diverse and interdisciplinary knowledge. This enables the researchers to support Swiss agriculture and to develop and optimise economically, ecologically and socially sustainable production systems in the fields of animal husbandry and plant cultivation. Their core competences are agricultural economics, international agriculture and rural development, sustainability and ecosystems, livestock systems, horse rearing and plant production systems.

Multifunctional forest management

During the course of research and service projects, the researchers develop practical principles and IT innovations for sustainable and use-oriented management of the Swiss forests. Here, they always take into account the social significance of forests as well as their utility and protective functions. As well as Swiss-based projects, the forestry specialists generate contributions to international forestry politics and to discussion about the role of the forests in strategies to counteract climate change.

The researchers confront the challenges of the food industry along the entire value chain, from production of the raw materials through to food processing, trading and consumption. In the process they include food science, economic, health and social aspects and establish a specific application.

Research field knowledge systems and knowledge transfer

The focus is on the question of how knowledge is generated, conveyed and used in different contexts. The researchers conceptualise 

  • educational and training courses in the fields of didactics and methodology
  • vocational education and training projects and consultancy
  • evaluations and services for stakeholders in Switzerland and abroad

– and provide support during implementation. The paramount aim is to boost the effectiveness of research and consultancy projects with targeted methodological questions and findings. In the process, employees make use of their own research projects and are able to network with diverse partners.
