The language of tuition at Bern University of Applied Sciences is generally German. In addition, lectures in French and/or English take place as part of numerous study courses. Adequate knowledge of the language of tuition is in any case a prerequisite for admission and a successful study stay in Switzerland.
BFH offers its exchange students German courses in co-operation with the University of Bern. The German as a Foreign Language (DaF) unit runs courses up from level A2.2.

A placement test is required as part of registration.
Please also note the integration course shortly before the start of the semester. Students who are interested in taking this course can register at their department’s International Relations Office.
Courses cost between CHF 200.- and 400.-. BFH pays the course costs for Erasmus/SEMP students. Interested students should seek information from their department's mobility office in good time.
A good knowledge of German is a requirement for admission to most programmes. This means that beginner courses are not offered by the University of Bern; please make quite sure of what the language requirements are. On the Biel/Bienne campus, knowledge of French and German is required.
In Bern there are various private schools offering intensive and extensive German courses at all levels:
Erasmus/SEMP students can apply to their department's mobility office for a contribution to the course costs before the language course begins. If the application is accepted, up to 80% (max. 1,500 CHF) of the course costs are covered.
The accredited distance learning French course of the Ecole de français langue étrangère at the University of Lausanne is also open to interested persons outside the UNIL who wish to improve their advanced beginner’s skills (from Level A2 to C1-C2 of the European Language Portfolio).
