Welcome Event 22 September 2017

On 22 September 2017, Bern University of Applied Sciences (BFH) invited all incoming international students to the semester’s welcome event.

We met at 7pm at the Billard Center in Bern. The international students slowly trickled in. Some were probably not aware that the programme was supposed to start Swiss- like on time at 7 o’clock!

With the academic 15 minutes of delay, I presented together with my colleague Ben Hochreutene the different activities the international students can take part in during their stay, including those offered by BFH sports and the Erasmus Student Network (ESN).

Then the billiards could finally begin. We split into groups, spread among the eight billiards tables and followed the instructions of the four instructors, Eliane, Ändu, Reto and Alessio. Thanks to them, many amateurs learnt the proper skills from scratch and the professionals picked up a few insider tips and tricks.

To keep our strength up, BFH offered an aperitif with sandwiches and snacks that was welcomed by all. The atmosphere was overall very friendly and the incoming students really enjoyed the chance to get to know each other and do some networking. By 10pm, some students would probably have liked to play on. Ändu proudly told us that billiards is the most widely played sport in the world.

The Billard Center noticeably filled up with more customers and the next players were already waiting for their round – the best proof of the popularity of this fascinating game.
