Generative AI: are the new tools implemented in the workplace?

18.02.2025 A study on the use of generative AI in the workplace, with a focus on Switzerland, shows its potential in terms of productivity and creativity. However, organisational hurdles are slowing down the integration of this technology.

Key points at a glance

  • Approximately two thirds of respondents use GenAI weekly or more, mainly for creating and editing text, coding and knowledge acquisition.
  • The main benefits of GenAI are seen in the increase in efficiency and the support of creative processes.
  • Organisational hurdles are slowing down the full integration of this technology in the workplace.

A study by the Generative AI Lab at Bern University of Applied Sciences, which collected data from 106 participants, sheds light on the use of Generative AI (GenAI) among professionals. Approximately two thirds of respondents use the technology weekly or more, mainly for creating and editing text, coding and knowledge acquisition. The main benefits of GenAI are seen in the increase in efficiency and the support of creative processes. These findings are consistent with previous studies.

Generative AI report

This paper presents the results of an exploratory survey investigating how professionals and organizations are using generative AI (GenAI). The study focuses on three key research questions: how professionals are using GenAI as well as its key applications and benefits, the extent of its integration into business processes, and the concerns and barriers to wider adoption. Data was collected from 106 professionals across a range of industries, with a focus on Switzerland. The results show that GenAI is primarily used to create content, increase efficiency and learn new concepts. In addition, our results show that while the adoption of GenAI is increasing, there are still some barriers, such as lack of perceived need, lack of experience and concerns about reliability. Ethical and regulatory concerns were also mentioned by some respondents. This study provides valuable insights into the growing role of GenAI in the professional environment, highlighting both its transformative potential and the challenges organizations face in its wider implementation.

Barriers hinder integration into work processes

Despite growing individual use, embedding in internal business processes remains limited. Only a third of respondents indicated that generative AI has been integrated in their work processes or products. Barriers such as a lack of experience, no perceived need or ethical and legal concerns impede wider implementation. Managers in particular also emphasise risks in terms of data security and regulatory challenges.

“Our survey has shown that there is still a lack of awareness about how AI can be used most effectively in a company.”

Proven interest but lack of knowledge

“Our survey has shown that there is a fundamental interest but still a lack of awareness about the potential benefits of AI in use with company data,” says Mascha Kurpicz-Briki, whose team conducted the survey. More than 60% of respondents believe that GenAI holds great potential for the future. To capitalise on this potential, companies should invest in training, infrastructure and strategies, while also addressing concerns about reliability and ethics. “This is where our applied research can provide valuable assistance,” says Mascha Kurpicz-Briki. The expertise of her laboratory can help in building up a company’s know-how and analysing the available data to see whether and how AI can best be used.
