SAVE THE DATE: 30 Years of International Agriculture and HAFL Hugo P. Cecchini Institute Annual Event 11 June 2024

Join us at the HAFL Hugo P. Cecchini Institute’s fourth annual event, held in collaboration with the BFH-HAFL International Agriculture specialisation, which celebrates 30 years in 2024. The theme is “Building bridges and joining forces: engaging youth in shaping sustainable food systems and landscapes.”

11.06.2024, 14.00–17.00 Uhr – BFH-HAFL, Zollikofen

The HAFL Hugo P. Cecchini Institute contributes to the development of sustainable smallholder agricultural, forest and food systems in low- and middle-income countries.

Since its inception in 2020, we have organised an annual event to bring partners and contributors together to discuss current topics relating to the international development agenda.

This year we focus on the role of youth in the future of sustainable landscapes and food systems.

Programme

There will be a keynote speech, staff inputs, three interactive debates involving participants, and an apéro. The event will be held in person and streamed online.

Keynote speaker

Genna Tesdall, the director of Young Professionals for Agricultural Development (YPARD), will discuss the role of youth in fostering sustainable food systems and landscapes, as well as YPARD’s work in the sector.

Interactive debates

Three debates will be led by young and established professionals. Annual Event participants will split into groups to debate the following hot topics:

  • Localisation: how do we move beyond the persisting dichotomy of Global North-South cooperation?

  • The Generational Divide: who’s responsible for sustainable food systems and landscapes?

  • Farmers, protests and broken food systems: where is the disconnect between society, policy and producers?

Apéro

A chance to network with colleagues from 17:00 onwards.

Internal events

Other internal events planned during the year as part of the 30 Years of International Agriculture celebrations include a poster exhibition at BFH-HAFL; a culinary journey with cafeteria offerings from Cameroon, India and Bolivia; a workshop with International Agriculture alumni and BSc internship host organisations; and a Brown Bag Lunch. Announcements will be made throughout the year.

HAFL Hugo P. Cecchini Institute Annual Event
BFH-HAFL International Agriculture assistant Célia Bühler and Tètè Kodjo Émile, an agriculture student at the University of Lomé, Togo, measure the pH values of different soil samples during Célia's BSc internship in Togo in 2021. These collaborations, and their benefits, are the focus of our 2024 Annual Event.
