Projekt «Parked Spaces»

Thesis: The central atrium as a public space promotes community integration and an organic movement within the building, which permeates different layers of public and semi public spaces, generating experiences and appropriations of individuals.

The project, called Parked Spaces, aims to reuse the Parkhaus structure of the Biel/Bienne Hospital Center located in the Beaumont district, for the creation of new residential and work spaces and a public space for the city, which is born with the new complex derived from the restructuring of the new campus of the Hospital à Port. The building, which is located outside the hospital complex, has the function of housing the parking spaces for its users and guests. The pre-existence shows in its form and material, the brutality and strength of its structure, which were key points for the concepts for the new building proposal.

The way the building is implanted on the terrain, shows respect when dealing with the topography, following the natural curves of the terrain, and bringing in its facade the reference to the surrounding vegetation.

Following the goal of Atelier Holz, to reuse an existing structure, and thinking about the quality of the spaces to shelter people and activities, the new project starts from the gross structure of the Parkhaus, as a form of foundation, and proposes a central slot that provides better quality of light inside the building. The central atrium, born with this design idea, invites users to permeate and appropriate the interior spaces, establishing visual and spatial communication at various levels, and configuring a public space within the building.

With a program proposal focused on the sense of community and sharing, the project distributes the program along its floors in order to provide an organic promenade between the different levels of public, semi public and private spaces.

The spaces were designed in modular boxes following the existing axes, foreseeing the best use of heights and respecting the slope of the implantation. Within the living and working spaces, a new dynamic of planes and levels is created. Thinking about the thresholds that the central atrium provokes in the whole structure of the project, a transitory level between public and private is proposed for each space, allowing a direct contact between the interior and the exterior.
