Living Library – Insights into the lifeworld of addressees (BSS1203.69)
For Social Work students it is very important to get to know the lifeworld of the individuals or groups who are addressees of social work services. Getting to know their lifeworld can be challenging as differences in class, race, gender, sexual orientation, and language barriers form obstacles for a relationship “auf Augenhöhe”. If you are interested in the lifeworld of people who are different from yours and if you like reading stories, then this module is for you.
By seeing how these systems interact in lived experiences, students gain a deeper understanding of the structural barriers the people they work with may face, but also what are sources for relief and empowerment. Discussions will be partly in English (at least 50%) but all levels of English are welcome.
- Understand diverse lifeworlds by exploring how class, race, gender, and language shape everyday experiences.
- Recognize structural barriers and sources of empowerment in the lives of those you work with.
- Develop empathy and cultural sensitivity through reading and discussing stories.
