Specialty optical fiber production and applications in Switzerland

Modern applications for special-purpose optical fibres: learn more about the drawing tower for optical fibres that the Bern University of Applied Sciences, the University of Bern and the Switzerland Innovation Park Biel/Bienne operate in Biel.

28.02.2023, 1.30pm–6pm – SIPBB, Aarbergstrasse 46, 2503 Biel/Bienne (1 minute walk from the main railway station)

  • Place SIPBB, Aarbergstrasse 46, 2503 Biel/Bienne (1 minute walk from the main railway station)
  • Costs The participation is free of charge, registration is mandatory.

The drawing tower for optical fibres is located inside the SIPBB in Biel. With over 20m of height and a drawing furnace that can be operated at temperatures up to 2100°C, the tower is well suited for the production of a wide range of optical fiber types including standard fibers, microstructured fibers, doped active fibers, multi-material fibers to just name a few. The steady increase of photonic applications in the fields of communication, medicine, sensing, photonic integrated circuits, lasers, lighting, computing goes hand in hand with growing opportunities for new fiber types.

The choice of the new location for the drawing tower, after it had been hosted for 20 years at the University of Bern, was well thought through: the scientific crew that operates the drawing tower pursued the goal of strengthening the link between scientific and technological fiber developments with industrial needs. Placing the tower in a powerhouse of ideas like the SIPBB at the crossroad of science, technology and industry ensures dynamic and creative activities in the field of fibers and photonics.

The presentations in the workshop will give a short overview of the national and international status of optical fiber research and of industrial fiber applications. It will be rounded off by a guided tour through the drawing tower. A networking apero at the end will allow to develop new ideas and initiate new projects.

The workshop is supported and co-sponsored by the following institutions:
