Development of a Climate Proofing Approach for Caritas projects

HAFL develops a generic climate proofing approach, which can be applied to and by any CARITAS project to allow systematically integrating climate risks in project planning and implementation.

Ausgangslage

The objective of the HAFL mandate is to develop a generic Caritas climate proofing approach, which can be applied to and by any CARITAS project. The approach will be piloted in the Caritas KITA Ill project in Mali (under a separate mandate) and shall allow systematically integrating climate risks into project planning and implementation. The climate proofing approach will include assessments on projected climate change as well as participatory methods to assess potential impacts on smallholder farmers and other project stakeholders. The climate corridor toll developed by CARITAS shall form part of the approach and be integrated into a wider climate proofing framework (e .g. CEDRIG). Climate proofing will also integrate the assessment of expected effects of project activities on GHG emissions (approach developed under a separate mandate). Further, indicators will be identified that allow assessing and monitoring Caritas projects' contribution to climate change adaptation and mitigation. Tools will be provided that allow for standardized assessments of climate projections and facilitate participatory assessments of climate change risks. Complex calculations, such as the climate corridor analysis, are automated as far as possible, and a user-friendly interface for the GHG emission calculations provided. The WOCAT data base will form part of the climate proofing approach, and training material will be developed (including the Kita project experience as a case study).
