In conversation with Cornelius Palmbach, Marie Eve Didier presents the new camera for image analysis.

29.04.2026, 5pm–7pm – HKB, Auditorium, Fellerstrasse 11, 3027 Bern

Grafik aus der Reihe: 4/5 der 2:1-Grafik in schwarz. Oberster Fünftel in Gelb. Gross geschrieben in weisser Farbe #199

This lecture presents the development of multispectral imaging (MSI) tools for the non-invasive examination of artworks. It starts with an overview of MIEWA, a joint research project of HKB, CSEM and MATIS, the Swiss company that developed the new MATIS Thalia camera and the MATIS Studio web application for image processing. Through concrete examples, it will be illustrated how MSI can support the study of artworks by revealing features not visible to the naked eye, such as underdrawings, retouching, pigment variations, or surface alterations. Potential applications in conservation and technical art history will be discussed, as well as the implementation of analytical models, including machine learning approaches, to assess and classify colorants. The lecture will also address the current limitations, including spectral constraints and interpretation challenges. It will conclude with a live demonstration of the Thalia camera.
