Specialist Courses + Short Advanced Studies (SAS)

Specialist courses and Short Advanced Studies (SAS) are targeted continuing education programmes in manageable, bite-size formats. You acquire the exact skills you need in your current job or for the next step in your career without committing yourself directly to a more comprehensive programme.

Short Advanced Studies are academic continuing education programmes in a bite-size format. They are worth 1 to 9 ECTS credits and correspond to microcredentials. Upon completion, a competency assessment is conducted, the results of which demonstrate the student’s achievements. You can complete the SAS programmes with or without ECTS credits, and the credits can be being allocated to a CAS, DAS or MAS, depending on the programme.

Specialist courses and SAS programmes are open to all individuals, regardless of whether or not they hold a general baccalaureate. They offer a low-threshold entry into higher continuing education. Most specialist courses and SAS programmes are also suitable for people seeking a career change. Only some of them require subject-specific prior knowledge. The offer is aimed at people who want to develop their skills without committing to a long-term, multi-year programme. You will receive a recognised credential, as is customary for microcredentials.

Continuing education that fits into your daily life

Specialist courses and SAS programmes can be easily combined with work and private life. Depending on the course, they are conducted on site, online or in hybrid format. The workload is clearly defined, allowing effective planning. The SAS programmes encompass 30 to 270 study hours and can be easily integrated into your daily life.

Finding and registering on a continuing education programme

With a selection of over 200 specialist courses and SAS programmes, you can choose the option that best suits your current needs and register directly online. If you choose a SAS programme, you will then decide whether you want to complete it with or without ECTS credits and have it credited towards another form of continuing education at a later stage.

At present, BFH continues to offer specialist courses in parallel to SAS programmes due to structural reasons. The existing range of continuing education courses is being developed further, with specialist courses being gradually transferred to SAS programmes. The aim is to ensure that acquired skills can be certified in a standardised, transparent manner in the future.
