An app to support people with an addiction disorder

29.11.2023 The “SFK MindCare” app helps patients with an addiction disorder to train their self-awareness and shows them strategies to self-regulate. The app was developed by researchers at Bern University of Applied Sciences BFH together with the Suchtfachklinik in Zurich.

In order to provide digital support for people with an addiction, the Suchtfachklinik in Zurich has developed the “SFK MindCare” app in collaboration with researchers of the Institute for Patient-centered Digital Health at Bern University of Applied Sciences BFH. The app offers tools and functions that help users train their self-awareness. For example, they can record cravings and the urge to consume, and specific emotions or stress. The app also offers concrete tips and exercises for managing cravings and stress, and instructions on mindfulness exercises and meditation. The app is not intended to replace personal care and individual treatment, but to complement it. The data is encrypted and stored on the MIDATA platform, ensuring data protection.

Close cooperation with psychologists and patients

The “SFK MindCare” app integrates methods of cognitive behavioural therapy that are used in non-digital settings. Its development took place in close cooperation with psychologists and patients. The app is currently tested thoroughly with patients at the Suchtfachklinik in Zurich in order to identify expansion and improvement opportunities.

The “SFK MindCare” app is free of charge and ad-free. It is primarily aimed at patients of the Suchtfachklinik Zurich. However, it can benefit all people affected by an addiction disorder, even if they are not being treated there.
