Situation

The Global Agenda is composed of representatives from governments, the private sector, academia, non-governmental organisations, social movements and local and intergovernmental organisations. The outcomes of the Agenda are 1) evidence and practice change by delivering evidence-based options and solutions, 2) enhanced dialogue by facilitating stakeholder engagement and understanding and 3) policy change by catalysing food systems policy change. HAFL has been member of the Agenda since 2011 and currently represents the Federal Office for Agriculture (FOAG)'s interests, as Chair of the Academia and Research Cluster and as a member of several task forces.

Course of action

The Global Agenda provides a platform to bring together the different stakeholders of the livestock sector and to promote policy dialogue, exchange of knowledge and experience, and joint action for sustainable livestock development. The diversity of members, with regional and local roots, enables the Global Agenda to address the many challenges to the sustainable development of the livestock sector. The work programme of the Global Agenda 2019-2021 is primarily based on the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) relevant to the livestock sector and aims to contribute to the achievement of these goals. Issues that GASL is addressing are divided into four main sustainability areas: (1) Food and nutrition security, (2) Livelihoods and economic growth, (3) animal health and welfare, and (4) climate and natural resource use. In order to best support and shape the implementation of the Global Agenda, the work in different various committees is central. HAFL has been an active member of GASL since its inception in 2011. It represents the Federal Office of Agriculture (FOAG) interests in the Global Agenda through active participation in the Academia and Research Cluster, the Editorial Board and in several task forces.
