Support value chain analysis of small ruminants in Borana

In Borana sheep and goats are widely produced and traded for meat. Nevertheless a more precise estimation of trade and slaughter and their respective locations and volumes is still lacking.

Steckbrief

Ausgangslage

It is currently assumed that an increased volume of shoats could be slaughtered and their meat consumed locally, rather than being transported to large towns for slaughter at abattoirs and for further export. For this purpose, the necessity of building a medium-sized slaughterhouse in Borana shall be examined. It is estimated that developing a decentralised slaughter facility would potentially allow women to take a larger stake in the shoat value chain than they currently have in the beef value chain.

Vorgehen

In order to better appraise trade routes and volumes of shoats traded from and to Borana, a more comprehensive appraisal of the value chain shall be undertaken as a first step. Depending on the outcome of this value chain assessment, a feasibility study of the slaughterhouse shall be done as a second step. As a third step, a business plan for the establishment and the construction of a slaughter facility ready to launch for tendering purposes shall be drafted.
