Music rolls are an integral part of the history of sound recording and mechanical music. They offer a comprehensive insight into the technological, musical, cultural and economic history of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Recent projects to preserve music rolls through scanning and digitisation have sparked wider interest in this field. This work has enabled technical studies of the music rolls, which represent an early digital record of musical performance. Archival documents also provide insights into the business practices and technology of music roll production.
