Two impressive master’s theses receive the Styner Prize!
11.10.2021 At the graduation ceremony on 24 September 2021, two graduates of the Master of Science in Engineering (MSE) received the Styner Prize for their outstanding master’s theses. The Styner Foundation is again recognising two outstanding theses that demonstrate high innovation content and great economic potential, submitted by Master of Science in Engineering students at BFH. This year’s competition saw the selection of two works from very different technical areas of application.
First prize
This year, Kubilay Sahin won the first prize of CHF 10,000 for his master’s thesis entitled “Analysis, control and optimization of the pulse-width modulated current source rectifier”. In this wide-ranging thesis drawing on multiple technical disciplines, the graduate of the Master of Science in Engineering (MSE) programme demonstrated his analytical skills, his creativity and tremendous determination to find an optimal solution from both a technical and economic standpoint. The technology developed by Kubilay Sahin will mean in future that energy losses during the electric-vehicle charging process can be significantly reduced, thus making an important contribution to the everyday practicality of electric mobility
Second prize
The second prize of CHF 5,000 goes to Armin Jürg Schmidt for his thesis “Cell Phone Indoor Localization System”. In his extensive project, Mr Schmidt started by developing novel processes for precisely locating unwanted mobile phones in security-sensitive areas and integrating them into a functional solution. As part of the thesis, these processes were then implemented, operated and optimised in an existing built environment, allowing important conclusions to be drawn with regard to the possibilities and boundaries of current technologies and highlighting potential applications for the future
Styner Prize
Based in Bern, the Styner Foundation was launched in 2007 by Rudolf Styner and Marianne Styner-Wälti. The primary purpose of the foundation is to support humanitarian and ecological projects.
