Development of high-performance monolayer mixes

Little use is currently made of monolayer asphalt mixes. This project aims to develop high-performance, monolayer mixes with low energy and environmental impact.

Factsheet

Situation

Roads are traditionally made up of several layers of asphalt mix with each performing specific functions. A multi-layer structure gives the road good rigidity while also ensuring safety and comfort for users. Monolayer mixes are rarely used for both the base and surface layers and their application is currently limited to very low-traffic roads. They nevertheless offer great potential, in particular due to design, environmental and energy factors, all of which are currently priority issues for infrastructure managers. In this context, the project partners wish to develop monolayer asphalt mixes with low energy and environmental impact which also possess the mechanical properties required in a demanding environment (traffic, climatic impact). A lab study and in-situ testing (experimental section) will be carried out to develop the product, to ensure it is durable, to define its area of application, to determine the parameters required for sizing and to draw up guidelines on practical aspects of usage.

Course of action

A full procedure covering the lab development phase and then a full-scale testing and implementation phase have been defined by the project partners.
