Using RISE

Would you like to use RISE on agricultural holdings? RISE is available to anyone interested who works in agriculture, education, extension or research. Here you can find out everything you need to know.

Service offers: Licences and training

The use of RISE is subject to a licence fee. Students without a source of funding for their work may be provided with RISE free of charge.

To ensure quality application, prospective RISE users usually take part in a training course offered by BFH-HAFL or a partner recognised by RISE.

Licences

The RISE method provides you with a supportive tool for your work as an advisor. You can use it to analyse the sustainability of agricultural holdings and assist farm managers in adapting their operational strategy accordingly.

If you opt for a RISE licence, you will receive all the necessary working materials as well as access to the software that enables you to carry out professional consultancy work. To ensure quality of application, RISE training is required; this is conducted online or on-site, as per your preference. You can find out more about the training courses at the bottom of this page under «RISE training courses».

For pupils, students and future farmers it can be challenging to understand what sustainability in farming means and how it can be measured. With RISE, you as a teacher have a method at hand that allows you to make sustainability in agriculture tangible for your learners. Together with your class, you can conduct RISE surveys on real farms. This makes for an exciting multiple-day practical lesson unit based on a real-life example.

To ensure quality of application, RISE training is required; this is conducted online or on-site, as per your preference. In the training for teachers, you will learn how to apply the method and how to use it in the classroom. You can find out more about the training at the bottom of this page under «RISE training courses».

Please also consult the CAAST platform established at BFH. The Community for Applied Agricultural Sustainability Teaching connects teachers at agricultural faculties and empowers them to train students in the implementation of sustainable agriculture.

Since 1999, student work has been conducted using RISE, either for farm assessments or, for example, with a view to further developing the method’s indicators and application.

Where a bachelor, master or PhD thesis is completed as part of a research or consultancy project (with a project budget), the normal fees for a single-user licence apply (CHF 740 incl. VAT / € 690 or USD 730 excl. VAT). Read more here:  Research price list

Where a bachelor, master or PhD thesis is completed without funding, we can provide RISE free of charge, following verification. However, this also means that we can only provide minimal support. Additional support is charged at CHF 125 incl. VAT / € 115 or USD 120 excl. VAT per hour.

We will arrange a meeting with you and possibly your supervisor in order to clarify all administrative and technical questions, including whether you will need to attend a training course.

We ask you to send us a copy of the thesis upon completion; we can treat the work as confidential if you so wish. Provided we have your consent, we would be pleased to present the work to the public on our website. Please also tell us the name of your university and department and your supervisor. This will allow us to better understand your context and offer you optimal support.

It is not easy to make the sustainability of agricultural holdings quantifiable. With RISE you have a method that can quantify sustainability by means of indicators. The software provides you with various functions to collect and evaluate your data. You can carry out individual farm-level evaluations, but also group evaluations. RISE can take on various supporting functions in your research study. We would be pleased to outline these functionalities for you in a personal meeting. Please use the contact form to get in touch with us.

If you decide to obtain a RISE licence, you will receive all the necessary working materials as well as unlimited access to the software, which enables you to conduct scientifically sound surveys.

The licence agreement is limited in time and is not automatically renewed. One month before the licence agreement expires, the licensee will be contacted by BFH and invited to renew the licence.

Training

It is demanding to manage an agricultural holding in a sustainable manner. The training courses will provide you with the necessary knowledge and with RISE you will be given a method to develop farms sustainably together with the farmers and to give them comprehensive advice on this complex topic.

In small groups, you will learn to autonomously apply the RISE method and to assess and optimise the sustainability of agricultural holdings. Regular online or on-site training courses are held by HAFL or by competent external organisations.

The participants get to know the working materials including the software, prepare for the interview and carry out a survey on a working farm of their choice. Together they evaluate the survey and prepare for the feedback meeting with the farm managers. In this way, the participants carry out a survey from start to finish and are assisted by the course instructors every step of the way. In order to obtain the status of «RISE consultant», following on from the training, two additional farms must be autonomously surveyed and advised using the RISE method.

Online training

  • Scope: Online training in 4 sessions (total of 8h). Independent work stages before and inbetween the training sessions (~20h). One assisted and two autonomous RISE surveys. Programme Online RISE Training Course

  • Price per person (for a group size of nine people): CHF 539 / € 518 / USD 511 *

On-site training

  • Scope: On-site training on 2 days (total of 8h). Independent work stages before and after the training days (~20h). One assisted and two autonomous RISE surveys
