Master of Arts in Music Pedagogy

Course summary

The Master’s degree in Music Pedagogy is a joint artistic and pedagogical degree, covering a broad range of styles, which qualifies graduates to teach music. It combines expressive and reflective artistic abilities and technical skill with the ability to communicate these in an educational setting.

The objective of the course of study is to train responsible teachers of music. They need a high level of artistic skill, an ability to reflect, and a solid mastery of their instrument or voice. The heart of the degree is therefore a general music education with stylistic, cultural, academic and historical breadth.

Teachers of music foster children and adults with various musical and cultural backgrounds. Their careers are generally based on several pillars: they work at schools or music schools as teachers of music, they work as artists and manage or support projects such as concerts, musicals, tours and other events. As a specialty training for future school teachers together with the educational-didactic course of study at the Pedagogical University of Bern, the course of study with a specialisation in Music S II leads to a qualification to teach at secondary schools.
