Playtime: Examining microtonal practices Student-led Symposium
The symposium presents the results of a semester-long exploration into microtonality: its theoretical foundations, performance approaches, and creative potentials.
12.01.2026, 6pm–7.30pm – HKB, Grosser Konzertsaal, Papiermühlestrasse 13d, 3014 Bern
Conventional equal tuning with clearly defined keys in semitones – ideally embodied in the piano keyboard – is just one of many ways to organize the pitch system. It has long been expanded, researched, examined in global contexts, and questioned. The HKB has a small but fine collection of microtonal instruments, such as a third-tone grand piano and a sixteenth-tone piano and has been researching the field for a long time.
Students from the HKB’s Department of Music investigate diverse tuning systems and microtonal sound worlds and develop their own artistic and reflective responses. Through performances, premieres, and presentations, the symposium invites audiences to experience new ways of hearing and conceiving music. The event concludes with a concert with the works by Georg Friedrich Haas, Claus-Steffen Mahnkopf and HKB composition students.
