Biography
- Yannis Rammos regularly gives masterclasses in piano and chamber music across Europe; recent engagements include the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, the Anton Bruckner Privatuniversität, the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre, the Verbier Festival Academy, and the Saint Petersburg State Conservatory and its Special Music School. He trained with the pianist Viktor Abramov in Russia and, over many years, with artist-scholars of Schenkerian interpretive practice at the CUNY Graduate Center and the Sibelius Academy. As a pianist he has performed in the historic Green Hall of the Russian Institute of Art History. He has taught piano and musicianship at New York University and lectured for several years at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne on subjects ranging from timbre theory and music semiotics to tonal analysis and the philosophy of music historiography.
His scholarship pursues questions born at the keyboard: “vocality” in Russian musical thought and practice, traditions of linear counterpoint, asynchrony and pedaling, anxieties of authenticity and influence, as well as new perspectives on artist training. It has appeared in Quodlibet and Music Theory & Analysis, among other venues. He is regularly called upon to supervise theses at universities in Europe and beyond, and has served on piano competition juries. In 2026 he co-convened, with John Koslovsky, the symposium “Renegotiating the Musical Masterwork” at KU Leuven. He sits on the editorial board of the journal Analitica.
He holds a PhD from New York University and was a Fulbright fellow in piano. He joined the Institut Interpretation in 2026, after working as postdoctoral research and teaching associate at the Digital and Cognitive Musicology Lab of the EPFL; he was formerly based at the Sibelius Academy. He is currently piano artist-faculty at European University Cyprus.
