Monitoring the condition of tools through acoustics

04.11.2022 Not too early and not too late: tools must be changed at just the right time. In a new Innosuisse project led by the Haute Ecole Arc Ingénierie, researchers from the Institute for Intelligent Industrial Systems I3S at Bern University of Applied Sciences BFH are developing a method for monitoring the condition of tools through acoustics.

Changing tools due to wear at just the right time is vitally important. Leaving this too late can result in components having unsatisfactory surface properties and inaccurate dimensions. However, changing them too early incurs unnecessary costs and creates more process interruptions. To determine the condition of tools more accurately, researchers from the Institute for Intelligent Industrial Systems I3S at BFH – in collaboration with several industry partners – are developing a method for monitoring tool condition through acoustics in a new Innosuisse research project led by the Haute Ecole Arc Ingénierie.

Study in advance

Beforehand the researchers published a study on hybrid machine learning – a method that will also be applied in the new research project.
