New joint heads of the Research Institute for Security in the Information Society RISIS

03.08.2020 From 1 August 2020, Endre Bangerter and Bruce Nikkel will become joint heads of the Research Institute for Security in the Information Society RISIS at Bern University of Applied Sciences BFH. They are taking over from Eric Dubuis, who led the Institute from 2011 and will now focus on his role as head of the Information Technology Degree Programme.

Endre Bangerter has been a professor of computer science and IT security at BFH since 2006. Before this, he worked as a software developer, technical consultant and researcher at IBM Global Services, IBM Research and Accenture. He has led the Security Engineering Group at the RISIS since the Institute’s founding in 2007. In 2018, he and a former student created the spin-off Threatray, a company that analyses malware and protects from cyberattacks.

Bruce Nikkel is an expert in cybercrime. He has been a professor of digital forensics at BFH since 2017 and is head of the Master of Advanced Studies in Digital Forensics and Cyber Investigation at BFH. He founded the Cybercrime Intelligence and Forensic Investigation Team at UBS, where he currently works part-time. He has worked in the field of security at UBS since 1997.

Lukas Rohr, head of the Engineering and Information Technology Department, is pleased that the RISIS has found two specialists in Endre Bangerter and Bruce Nikkel who are already part of the Institute and know it extremely well. ‘I have great confidence that they can build on existing content and steer the Institute consistently through future challenges.’

Research Institute for Security in the Information Society RISIS

Staff at the RISIS in Biel research and develop new technologies and tools for IT security and privacy protection. In doing so, they also help promote trust in the modern information society. The Institute consists of four research groups: the Security Engineering Group, the E-Voting Group, the Security and Privacy Group, and Wireless Communication and Secure Internet of Things.
