He earned his doctorate (Dr. phil. hist.) at the Institute for European Global Studies of the University of Basel and the European University Institute (EUI) in Florence, Italy. Thomas Gees received a 24-month Marie Curie Fellowship funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF).
