CV

  • Dr. Roman Rietsche is a Professor for Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) at Bern University of Applied Sciences (BFH), Switzerland, where he directs the Human-Centered AI-Based Learning Systems (HAIS) Lab. His work sits at the nexus of educational technology, psychology, and human-computer interaction.
His research follows three connected work streams: developing effective information systems that embed artificial intelligence and large language models, designing and measuring behavior change (e.g., digital coaching), and evaluating the impact of digital technologies on organizations in the context of reskilling and upskilling. Among other tools, he developed DigiBot, an AI-enhanced tool for assessing personal digital competencies as part of the European Union's digital proficiency evaluation.

A further focus of his work is digital feedback and the design and development of innovative learning systems that use generative AI and natural language processing. His learning system, LOOM, has been used by over 2,000 students in Germany, the USA, and Switzerland, who together wrote 15,000 pieces of feedback.

His research has been published in leading international outlets in Human-Computer Interaction (e.g., CHI), Natural Language Processing (e.g., EMNLP, COLING), and Information Systems (e.g., ECIS, ICIS), as well as in journals such as the Academy of Management Learning & Education and Electronic Markets. He is a regular track chair for ICIS, ECIS, and the German Conference on Information Systems.

During his one-year research fellowship with the Swiss National Science Foundation, Dr. Rietsche was a visiting researcher at Temple University in Philadelphia, USA, and the University of Cambridge in England. He studied Computer Networking and Information Technology and received his Master's degree in Information Systems from the University of Mannheim. His Ph.D., completed at the University of St.Gallen, was in the field of business innovation, focusing on the design, development, and evaluation of IT tools for giving and receiving digital feedback.
