Xylorama: Traditional Japanese Wooden Structures

On 15 October 2026, Yuji Kanesada, Japanese master carpenter (Tōryō) and CEO of Kanesada Bansho, will share his expertise in traditional Japanese timber architecture as part of the Xylorama lecture series.

Buddhist temples, Shinto shrines and traditional Japanese houses are among the most remarkable examples of timber construction worldwide. Built using techniques that have been passed down through generations, these structures reflect outstanding craftsmanship, technical mastery and a profound understanding of wood as a building material.

Drawing on practical examples, Yuji Kanesada will present the principles and techniques behind these exceptional buildings, from structural design to the intricate assembly of timber elements. The lecture will offer unique insights into this rich architectural heritage and highlight the challenges involved in preserving it for future generations.
