Designing dynamic watercourses
21.07.2025 Many bodies of water in Switzerland lack space and dynamics. This prevents them from forming diverse habitats. Nature can be supported with targeted structural measures to secure habitats in the long term. A project from Water Agenda 21 involving BFH is pooling knowledge and experience to support experts in the planning and implementation of measures.
Key points at a glance
- Many bodies of water in Switzerland lack diverse and lively habitats.
- Nature can be supported with targeted structural measures.
- On behalf of Water Agenda 21, a handbook, 17 construction type sheets and a collection of case studies have been developed to support experts in the planning and implementation of measures.
Deadwood islands, rootstocks or structural stones
Sustainable water protection requires space for natural ecosystems. Ecological deficits in bodies of water can be compensated for through structural measures. The project, which was initiated by various cantons, brought together decentralised measures developed throughout Switzerland.
Plattform Renaturierung
Plattform Renaturierung is an information platform for the renaturation of water bodies under Water Agenda 21. It is financially supported by the Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN). The platform serves the exchange of information, experience and knowledge. It is aimed at specialists who deal with renaturation measures on bodies of water.
Water Agenda 21 is the network of actors in the management of water in Switzerland. The network functions as an information platform for cross-interest topics and as a forum for the discussion and further development of important water management issues.

«The resulting products provide inspiration and valuable tips and tricks.»
In collaboration with experts from engineering and ecological offices, cantonal specialist agencies and experts from the scientific community, BFH’s Institute for Infrastructure and Environment and the Federal Office for the Environment FOEN, two central products have been created to inspire and support specialists in planning, construction and maintenance:
- Manual on structural measures
The handbook contains a sound basis for planning, implementing and monitoring the effectiveness of structural measures. - Construction type sheets
Construction type sheets were drawn up for 17 structural measures. On a double-sided A3 page, the construction type sheets contain clear sketches and photos as well as practical information on the design and installation of structures.
BFH contributed its expertise in the field of near-natural hydraulic engineering to the project. The findings are also incorporated into teaching. The module ‘Watercourse Revitalisation’ is a compulsory module in the Bachelor in Civil Engineering [linked]. The Master of Science in Engineering [linked] also has a focus on hydraulic engineering.
«The dialogue between hydraulic engineering and fisheries has generated real added value.»
