Researcher Diaries: Biochar and cocoa production

20.08.2024 The latest Researcher Diary features Elena Zähnler, a BFH-HAFL BSc in International Agriculture student currently doing an internship in Peru.

My name is Elena Zähnler, and I am currently working on my bachelor thesis with the organization Helvetas as part of their SeCompetitivo project in Peru. My research focuses on conducting a cost-benefit analysis of the production and application of biochar, specifically within the cocoa production sector in the San Martín region.

Recently, I had the unique opportunity to spend several days with Choba Choba, a Swiss social chocolate enterprise, and Cooperativa Agraria Cacaotera (Acopagro). Choba Choba is a social business where cocoa farmers are co-owners. The organisation operates a vertically integrated value chain and collaborates closely with Acopagro in Peru on cocoa production, research and development, and impactful projects.

My role

To deepen my understanding, I embarked on a journey from my home in Tarapoto to Santa Rosa. This involved a six-hour trip, including a three-hour ride in a local taxi, followed by another three hours by boat. Upon arrival, I was warmly welcomed by the hostel owner, who introduced me to the daily routines, including helping with the chickens.

During my stay, a specialist from Choba Choba guided me through the cacao parcels, where I had the chance to taste cacao fruit for the first time – a delightful discovery that made it my new favourite fruit. I also participated in a hybrid meeting with the leadership team and agricultural specialists to identify potential interviewees for my research on biochar's cost and the interest among local farmers.

Accompanied by Francis, a local agronomist, I conducted field research to observe the absorption rate of liquids through different soil cover treatments. A loyal dog followed us throughout the day, adding a charming touch to the experience.

A warm welcome everywhere

The following days were filled with interviews, where I met many inspiring individuals involved in cocoa production. Both men and women welcomed me into their homes with heartfelt hospitality, making this experience profoundly enriching.

In addition to my time in Santa Rosa, I conducted interviews with other cooperatives, such as those in Piura. The warmth and inspiration I encountered in Peru were overwhelming, and I look forward to continuing my research and contributing to sustainable cocoa farming practices.

This field trip was an invaluable part of my research, providing firsthand insights into the cocoa production process and the potential benefits of biochar. The community's collaborative and supportive spirit was deeply moving, and I am grateful for the opportunity to learn from and contribute to their efforts. This experience highlights the potential of biochar in transforming cocoa production and underscores the importance of sustainable agricultural practices.
