  • Dr. Mascha Kurpicz-Briki obtained her PhD in the area of energy-efficient cloud computing at the University of Neuchâtel, Switzerland. After her PhD, she worked a few years in industry, in the area of open-source engineering, cloud computing and analytics. She is now professor for data engineering and the deputy lead of the Applied Machine Intelligence Research Group at the Bern University of Applied Sciences in Switzerland, investigating how to apply digital methods and in particular natural language processing to social and community challenges.
  • In particular, she is working on applied natural language processing (NLP) / machine learning for use cases having social or societal impact. This includes applications for healthcare, in particular in the field of AI for mental health, as well as research in the field of fairness in NLP, where she investigates how to measure and mitigate bias in word embeddings and language models. She is interested in human-centered NLP applications, following the principle of augmented intelligence - supporting humans instead of replacing them.
