29.06.2026 Bern University of Applied Sciences BFH is strengthening its expertise in digital and industrial transformation. As of 1 August 2026, two proven experts – Jörg Grimm in Industrial Engineering and Management Science and Jürgen Vogel in Data Engineering – will take the head of two key areas responsible for the training of future skilled workers.

Prof. Dr Jörg Grimm is succeeding Prof. Dr Stefan Grösser as head of the Industrial Engineering and Management Science division. Professor Grösser created and successfully established the division about ten years ago. Jörg Grimm has accumulated extensive experience in research and industry, complemented by his prior role as a lecturer and head of the ‘Supply Chain and Process Engineering’ specialisation. His core focus areas include procurement, technology-driven supply chains innovations, and the design of sustainable and resilient value networks.

The bachelor’s programme in Industrial Engineering and Management Science combines engineering, computer science and management. Students develop solutions at the intersection of technology, sustainability and business management, and actively contribute to the transformation of industry and businesses. The programme offers three specialisations: Business Engineering; Industrial Engineering; Supply Chain and Process Engineering. Graduates have the option to continue their studies on the Master of Science in Engineering (MSE) programme.

BSc Data engineering

The bachelor’s degree programme in Data Engineering teaches students skills in data management, data architecture and artificial intelligence. Students learn to develop data infrastructures and intelligent data systems, a key skill in the field of digitalisation and data-driven innovation. Students can choose between two specialisations: Applied Data Analytics and Machine Learning Engineering. For those seeking further specialisation, the subsequent Master of Science in Engineering (MSE) is an excellent option.

Data engineering as the foundation of a data-driven future

Prof. Dr Jürgen Vogel has taken over as head of the degree programme in Data Engineering, succeeding Prof. Dr Erik Graf. Erik Graf was instrumental in establishing the Data Engineering specialisation within the Bachelor in Computer Science, playing a key role in its development into a self-contained bachelor’s degree programme.

Jürgen Vogel has been conducting research and teaching in the fields of data engineering and machine learning for many years. His focus is on applying modern text analysis methods, such as large language models (LLMs), to create innovative software solutions. Under his leadership, the programme will further strengthen its position to meet the growing demand for skilled professionals in the data sector.

“Data has become one of the most crucial resources in contemporary society. Our objective is to train specialists who can both analyse data and develop robust, responsible data infrastructures as a foundation for innovation in business, industry and the public sector,” explains Jürgen Vogel.

As AI applications become more widespread, the importance of high-quality data and powerful data platforms is growing. Consequently, there is an increasing demand for specialists who can make data usable throughout its entire lifecycle, from collection and storage to intelligent analysis.

Hand in hand towards Campus Biel/Bienne CBB 2028

The ongoing development of both divisions is occurring against the backdrop of a significant milestone for BFH’s School of Engineering and Computer Science. The move to the new Campus Biel/Bienne in autumn 2028 will offer a modern environment for interdisciplinary collaboration, innovative teaching and learning methods, and even closer ties with business and industry.
