Sustainability Report 2026 – our contribution to the 2030 Agenda

15.06.2026 Over the past two years, BFH has significantly stepped up its sustainability efforts, as outlined in its recently published Sustainability Report.

Over the past two years, BFH has significantly stepped up its sustainability efforts. Sustainability remains a key strategic priority for BFH and will continue to play a significant role in the university’s development during the 2024/2025 reporting years. By placing a major focus on the three strategic thematic fields of Sustainable Development, Caring Society and Humane Digital Transformation, the university is strengthening its role as a driving force for change.

Sustainability is a duty – we’ve taken it to heart.

  • Prof. Dr. Sebastian Wörwag President

The 2026 Sustainability Report documents BFH’s sustainability activities across eight key topics. Through its numerous projects and initiatives, the university community is making a significant contribution to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

New resources for students

BFH is systematically expanding its provision of education for sustainable development in various ways, such as new degree programmes (e.g. Bachelor in Environmental and Resource Management, MAS in Sustainable Transformation), methodological innovations (2Slides4Future) and strong support for student engagement via Students4Sustainability.

It is important that BFH actively addresses the issue of sustainability, because we deserve a future—both in Switzerland and worldwide—that is shaped by peace and solidarity.

Sustainability-focused research

The strategic thematic field of Sustainable Development funded 13 interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research projects across the four focus topics of Food Systems, Thriving Spaces, Circular Economy and Social Transformation. BFH has made a tangible impact with various projects, (research) partnerships, the practice-driven application of findings and the transfer of knowledge into teaching.

Green Campus

BFH is working towards significantly reducing its emissions with its Climate Roadmap 2030. A large number of measures relating to buildings, mobility, catering and IT have already been implemented and are helping to raise awareness of the need for a climate-aware campus. In this way, the university is integrating climate-related aspects into its operational processes little by little.

Social engagement

With events such as the Sustainability Day of the Bernese Higher Education Institutions (link to German site), Science Cafés, Impact & Connect (link to German site) or Emma’s Farm Tour (link to German site), BFH is strengthening the knowledge transfer and dialogue with society. At the same time, BFH is deepening its national and international collaborations – for example, within the PIONEER Alliance, the Swiss Center for Care@home (link to German site) or the CES Circle Bern (link to German article) – which serve to promote greater innovation, social impact and knowledge transfer.

We urgently need new ways of thinking, narratives, role models and behavioural patterns, as well as social and technical innovations.

Top marks for BFH

For the fourth time, WWF Switzerland conducted its sustainability assessment ‘Sustainability at Swiss Universities’, examining how Swiss universities live sustainability in practice – in their structures, operations, research and teaching. The result for BFH is very pleasing: once again, it took first place among the nine universities of applied sciences that were assessed. A valuable confirmation that we are right to continue steadfastly on our chosen path.
